In the Spotlight this week is our Women's First Team Captain Darcey Kingdon.

How did you first get into football?

I first got into football when I was 5 years old. My mom worked at the football club, so I was always down there with her. She ended up signing me up for a team, and I instantly fell in love with the game. I was playing with friends, having fun, and from there it just became a big part of my life.

What made you move to Bay Olympic?

I was originally at eastern suburbs for 15 years but due  to so many changes at the club I decided to look elsewhere. I played 7aside with the boys at Bay Olympic and I had a couple friends that were in the women’s first team. I got told to come trial for the women’s team and when I did I  instantly fell in love with the vibe and atmosphere of this place one of the best decisions I’ve made.

What has been the biggest highlight in your playing history?

My biggest highlight came from one of the toughest challenges I’ve faced. When I was 16, I suffered an injury that kept me out for a year and a half. Coming back, I played one game but quickly realized I couldn’t keep up the way I used to. That moment made me step away to focus on my fitness and rebuild my confidence. I worked harder than ever, and when I returned—stronger and fitter than I’d ever been—I knew it was time for a fresh start. That’s when I decided to change clubs and joined Bay, ready for a new chapter.

You’ve been scoring a few goals this season, how did the winning goal against Papakura City feel?

Scoring the winner against Papakura City was an unreal feeling. It was one of those moments where everything just clicked—after all the hard work and setbacks the team had faced, being able to make that kind of impact felt incredibly rewarding. More than just the goal, it felt like a big step forward for us as a team, especially since it was our first win against them

Who do you think the secret weapon is in our Women’s Team this year…

I think our secret weapon this year is Edith. She’s an unreal midfielder—strong, fearless, and never backs down from a tackle. Her presence in the middle is massive, and I genuinely think she’s going to be a huge asset to this team as the season goes on.

What advice would you give for upcoming girls / women?

My advice to upcoming girls and women is to back yourself, always. There will be setbacks, doubts, and people who underestimate you, but if you stay committed, keep working hard, and believe in your ability, you’ll keep growing. Don’t be afraid to take up space, ask questions, and challenge yourself. Confidence is built, not given so trust the process.
